When Culture Blinds Us

My English skills weren’t good enough, so honestly, the EM (English Ministry) sermons were difficult for me to understand. I could partially follow them, but I inevitably missed parts as well. Still, right after the worship service ended, I headed straight to the kitchen to serve in dishwashing without attending any fellowship gatherings. On my way out after finishing kitchen duty, one of the EM members approached me and encouraged me to come again, so the following week I attended the EM service once more. After attending the next week as well, that same person recommended that I join the Saturday Fellowship/Bible Study. Since I wanted to spend my time centered on God and the church, I immediately accepted.

The Bible Study group was a gathering of about 8–9 people. Among them, five were the pastor, his wife, and their children, and there were three other brothers and sisters. Reading the Bible in English was actually hard to keep up with, but I could generally understand the conversations. The discussion also touched on a man named George Whitefield (note: the original says "Whitfield," but the historically correct spelling is "Whitefield") and how culture can blind people’s eyes. He was an outstanding preacher, but he held views on slavery that deserve criticism. The idea that culture blinds people really resonated with me.

내 영어실력이 충분하지 않아서 사실 EM 설교는 이해하기가 어려웠다.

부분적으로 이해가 되기는 했지만, 또 부분적으로 놓칠수밖에 없었다.

여전히 설거지 봉사를 가기 위해 예배가 끝나고 모임 없이 바로 주방으로 향했다.

주방 봉사를 끝내고 나오는 길에 어떤 EM 분이 또 와보라고 해서 그 다음주에 다시 한번 EM 으로 갔다.

그렇게 그 다음주에도 EM에 참석하고나니 이번에는 그 분이 토요일에 Fellowship/Bible Study에 참여하라고 추천하였다.

시간을 하나님이나 교회를 위주로 보내고 싶었기 때문에 나는 바로 수락을 하였다.

 

Bible Study 그룹은 8~9 명쯤 되는 모임이었고,

그중에 5명은 목사님과 사모님을 포함하여 목사님의 자녀분들이었고, 3명의 또 다른 형제 자매들이 있었다.

성경책을 영어로 읽을때 사실 따라가기 어려웠지만, 대체로 대화는 이해할수 있었다.

George Whitfield 라는 사람에 대한 이야기도 나왔는데 어떻게 문화가 사람의 눈을 가리는지에 대해서도 이야기가 나왔다.

그는 훌륭한 설교자였지만, 노예 제도 관해서는 비판을 받을만한 의견을 갖고 있었기 때문이다.

문화가 사람의 눈을 가린다는 말이 참 와닿았다.
