Refusing to receive Catholic baptism.

Here's the English translation:
On April 5, 2026, I was scheduled to receive baptism at a Catholic church on Easter, and after completing all the classes and my schedule, I was in a position where I only needed to receive it.
However, there had been a lingering discomfort and resistance in a corner of my heart, and I came to understand the reason for it less than a week before the baptism.
The reason was that I had already been baptized 12 years ago, on March 29, 2014.
When I first met with the priest, I mentioned this. I told him that I did not feel the need to be baptized, and that I had already been baptized in a Protestant church, so I asked whether I needed to receive baptism again.
The priest responded that Protestant baptism and Catholic baptism are different, so I initially accepted that explanation.
After completing all the catechumen classes and retreat, I gathered at the church for the final baptism practice, and my doubts began to grow.
This was because the baptism was administered “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,” using water—just as in Protestant baptism.
So I asked ChatGPT, Grok, Gemini, and DeepSeek. All of them gave the same answer: that receiving a second baptism does not align with Catholic doctrine.
So I contacted the church where I had previously been baptized and obtained a baptism certificate.
The pastor explained that, in the Presbyterian tradition, baptism is performed “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,” with water and the Holy Spirit.
Even though it was a busy Lenten season, they kindly prepared and sent the baptism certificate quickly, and I forwarded it to the church via email.
I did not send it directly to the priest. This was because his reaction felt predictable, and I could not trust him.
I became certain that my expectations about his response were correct through a phone conversation he requested about two days before the scheduled baptism.
I could no longer maintain trust in the priest for the following three reasons:
- He lied by claiming, in a text message that could serve as evidence, that he had never said Protestant and Catholic baptisms are different.
- He then requested a phone call and urged me to come on the baptism day, as if receiving First Communion and Confirmation were mandatory. When I refused, he became angry and rejected my admission into the Church.
- The reason I refused First Communion and Confirmation was because I believed that confession should take place beforehand. The priest never mentioned confession. Even if I had brought it up, it seemed likely he would have treated it casually, and I did not want to confess to a priest I could not trust.
Just as the priest did not treat catechumens too strictly—allowing baptism even if they had not memorized the Lord’s Prayer or the Apostles’ Creed—he may have intended to make my conversion process easier. However, from my perspective, it felt like being deceived through false statements. Ultimately, I think there was a difference between his position, managing a community and a church, and mine, surviving alone in the world.
Perhaps, from the standpoint of running a community, the priest acted this way out of a sense of responsibility for church administration. But as an individual believer, I did not want to build my faith on something untrue. In hindsight, receiving another baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation might not have been a grave sin, but for some reason, I felt strongly that I should not proceed that way.
So I sent my baptism certificate to another nearby Catholic church and requested confession there.
There may have been various reasons why I continued attending classes despite not wanting to be baptized, and even participated in baptism practice. I think I was attached to the name “Francis.”
- I came to know Pope Francis’s encyclical Laudato Si’, and I felt that my belief—that responsibility toward animals and the ecosystem is connected to faith—might be recognized. (However, in reality, the church held meat-centered gatherings and wasted food, not living according to the encyclical.)
- I believed that, like Saint Francis of Assisi, one should have love and responsibility for other creatures. After learning about the communion of saints, I thought that to follow Francis’s spirituality, I should be baptized and take his name. (But I came to realize that receiving the name Francis would not bring about any special miracle to change people’s hearts toward other creatures. I had received no special revelation.)
- My birthday is October 3, the day Saint Francis of Assisi passed into heaven. The year I was to be baptized marked the 800th anniversary Jubilee of Saint Francis. Like him, I had once tried to go to war but failed and returned to the Church. I felt that my concern for animals and other creatures closely resembled his. I had been placing Saint Francis of Assisi, Pope Francis, and myself on the same level. (I realized before baptism that this was my own misconception.)
I still intend to follow the spirituality of Francis, but I realized that, deep down, I had also developed a desire for some kind of miracle to occur if I were baptized and received the name Francis. Recognizing that this was misguided, I began to sort out my thoughts about baptism.
Additionally, like Bishop René Dupont of Andong, I wanted to maintain an open attitude toward other religions. If I disregarded my Protestant baptism and received Catholic baptism, it would amount to admitting that Protestant baptism is invalid. This may have been the biggest reason I refused rebaptism.
Although I strongly dislike Protestantism and Protestants, I still believe that God works through Protestant churches as well, and that there are sincere believers within them.
If I succeed in what I strive to do and give glory to God, I hope that God of both Protestants and Catholics will be glorified.
Oh, and there was one more thing. About a week before the baptism day, I told the priest not to try to persuade me but to pray for me instead, as I anticipated he would try to convince me. As expected, he did not simply wait and pray, but took various actions to persuade me. Everything unfolded just as I had expected.
The reason I asked for prayer over that one week was because I believe that if God truly works through prayer, then trying to control another person’s life, time, and money without even being able to change a single heart through prayer is wrong. If believers cannot help others in their struggles but only try to control them, I see that as irresponsible selfishness.
I was also disappointed that the priest disregarded my earlier statement that I would “only attend Mass” and, out of his own intentions, enrolled me in the youth group and pushed me into volunteering. He had clearly promised to protect me from having to participate in such activities, yet he forgot that promise within a few days.
Rather than anger, this made me want to approach faith more realistically. If everything could be resolved through prayer, I could fully trust and entrust myself to the Church and the priest. But since that is not the case, I felt the need to protect myself.
I still do not know what is right or wrong, but I would rather pursue a small goal—such as consistently attending Sunday Mass—than risk being hurt or becoming disillusioned and abandoning my faith altogether.
Above all, I felt the need to protect my own belief from the reality of organized religion, where the teachings of Laudato Si’ are not being practiced. In the end, everything unfolds according to God’s will, so I know that my stubbornness may not be right. But at the same time, since everyone lives according to their own judgment, I wonder whether insisting on mine is really so wrong.
