The Rosary and Strange Encounters

English translation:

After attending my first catechumen class, the very next day I prayed the Rosary for the first time. And the day after that, while heading to exercise, I had some strange encounters.

I usually walk to my workout spot looking down at the ground a lot. That’s because the route passes through an area with many homeless people, so there’s a lot of dirty trash and even dead rats on the ground, and I try to avoid stepping on them. Most days I just run past quickly, but that day I was walking slowly. Suddenly, from the side, a car window rolled down and a Black man shouted at me:

“Look up! It’s going to be alright! It’s going to be alright!”

At first, because of his intense appearance, I was startled and didn’t really understand what he was saying. But then I realized it was actually kind, encouraging words directed at me. Feeling grateful, I passed by that spot and continued jogging my usual route on the walking path. After completing one full loop as usual, I was walking through the parking lot when I saw an adult man. Nearby, a small child who looked about 5 to 10 years old — probably his kid — was running around. The man was driving an RC car toward me, then handed it over and said:

“This is yours now!”

Caught off guard, I took the controller and just stood there dumbfounded. The man gave me a fist bump. I returned the fist bump.

“Why…?”

I asked why, but he just greeted me again.

“Happy New Year! Merry Christmas!”

I felt suspicious and was confused and disoriented by the whole situation, but when he said “Merry Christmas,” I lowered my guard a little and accepted the gift. Because non-Christians usually say “Happy Holidays” and don’t use “Merry Christmas.”

Still dazed, I took the gift but had no idea what to do with it, so I just kept walking my normal route while controlling the RC car. Then the man followed me in his car and handed me the instruction manual. I thanked him, and we parted ways.

I brought the RC car home, but I couldn’t bring myself to throw it away, so I just left it on the outdoor stairs. They were really strange encounters. This all happened on Friday, January 9, 2026. Since that date is close to Orthodox Christmas, I started wondering whether the people I met might have been Orthodox Christians.

첫번째 예비 신자 수업을 듣고 난 다음날 처음으로 묵주기도를 해보았다. 그리고 그 다음날 운동을 가는데 이상한 만남들이 있었다. 

나는 보통 내가 운동을 하는곳까지 걸어가는 길에 바닥을 많이 보면서 걷는다. 왜냐하면 홈리스들이 많은 길이라 더러운 오물이나 죽은 쥐들이 많아서 밟을까 조심하며 걷기 때문이다. 대부분 달려서 빨리 지나가기도 하지만 그날은 천천히 걷고 있었는데, 옆에서 갑자기 차에서 창문이 내려지며 흑인 남자가 나에게 소리를 쳤다.

"Look up! It's going to be alright! It's going to be alright!"

처음에는 무서운 인상때문에 뭐라고 하는지 몰라서 당황했는데, 내용이 나에게 격려해주는 감사한 말이었다. 그렇게 그 사람들이 있는 곳을 지나 평소데로 산책로를 달렸다. 산책로를 평소데로 한바퀴를 돌고 주차장을 통과하여 걸어가고 있었는데, 어떤 한 성인 남자가 보였다. 그리고 그 사람의 아이로 보이는 5살~10살사이의 작은 아이가 달려가는 모습도 보았다. 그 남자는 RC 카를 몰아서 나에게 오더니, 나에게 그것을 주었다.

"이거 이제 너거야!"

나는 얼떨결에 조종기를 받고 멍하게 서있었는데, 그 남자가 나에게 주먹인사를 했다. 나도 받아서 주먹인사를 했다.

"Why..?"

나는 왜냐고 물었지만, 그 사람이 그냥 인사만 했다.

"Happy New Year! Merry Christmas"

나는 그 사람이 미심쩍었고, 무슨일인지 당황스럽고 혼란스러웠지만 Merry Christmas라는 말에 조금은 경계를 거두고 선물을 받았다. 왜냐하면 비기독교인들은 Happy Holiday라고 표현하지 Merry Christmas라는 말을 하지 않기 때문이다.

얼떨결에 선물을 받고 어찌할지 몰라서 그냥 RC카를 조종하여 평소 루틴으로 계속 걸었는데, 그 사람이 차를 타고 따라왔다. 그러고 설명서를 주었다. 고맙다고 하고 헤어졌다. 

집으로 RC카를 들고 와서, 버릴수도 없어서 그냥 집 밖 계단에 두었다. 이상한 만남들이었다. 2026년 1월9일 금요일에 있었던 일인데, 그 날이 정교회 크리스마스와 가까운 날이라 나는 내가 만난사람들이 정교회 기독교인들이 아니었을까 생각이 들었다.
